Chicagoland Dodge dealers will be getting their first 2008 Caravans in a ceremony being put on next week, but the mood's hardly the swinging glee it was in 1996 when the current Caravan dropped: Sales of everyone's breadboxes are swirling the bottom of the bowl, and Chrysler knew that it couldn't rely on sliding doors and Swivel 'n' Go seats to pull itself out this time. It had a contingency plan.
The plan, it seems, was to hinge the rear doors. Nearly identical in length to the existing Grand Caravan, the Dodge Journey crossover you see here is the brand's first attempt at a global people-mover. Based on a stretched Dodge Avenger, Journey is available in five-seat or seven (Dodge calls it "5+2", which should be telling) passenger variants and sports the same drivetrains - a 2.4-liter four, and 2.7-liter or 3.5-liter V6 - as the car that spawned it.
Journey won't be launched until Frankfurt this September, but the full press release is available by clicking below, as well an image gallery.
Well, let me be the first to say that I actually like it. Depending on the price I would even recommend this to someone in the market for such a vehicle.
We need a TCL Regional Forum so CLICK HERE and vote in favor of it.
D-C best plan on totally revamping the ride/handling and seriously increasing interior quality if they plan on trying to make this even remotely competitive in the Euro/UK market. Current D-C products get savaged over there for their terrible quality and ride/drive. (Not that they do much better here, I admit.)
"I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals: I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object."
I will give Dodge one thing, while it is a bit bland, this is the most tasteful looking Dodge I've seen in years. One word that comes to mind when I think of the Magnum, Charger, Nitro, Durango, Caliber and so on is "Gawdy." Beyond Tacky and gimmicky.
The grill on this vehicle actually FITS it and doesn't look like Dodge just slapped another Big-@$$ truck grill on it. This is a step in the right direction.

Huh? Do you mean you know you're high so you pay better attention to the road, or do you mean it actually helps you focus better? As in, you have a big test this morning so you chief a fat blunt so you can focus.

I first thought it was a Chrysler take on the Caliber when I saw the photo on Winding Road. Chrysler's recent offerings have not been so good (Caliber, Compass, Aspen, Patriot, Sebring, etc.)--hopefully this will be better. I wouldn't consider buying one since I'm not a sport-ute fan, but I'll withhold judgment until it hits the market. This may be a good product.
