MITSUBISHI Concept-RA shows that thrilling performance and environmental responsibility need not be mutually exclusive concepts. This coupe concept features the Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamics control system driveline and the Twin Clutch SST automated manual transmission used in Lancer Evolution, is powered by a new high-output, high-efficiency clean diesel engine.

The MITSUBISHI Concept-RA S-AWC driveline adds Active Steering and Active Damping control to the ACD, AYC, Sport ABS and ASC component systems that comprise the system used on Lancer Evolution. S-AWC integrally manages all of these systems to realize advanced levels of control over drive torque and braking, thereby upgrading traction, cornering and vehicle stability. All this adds up to intuitive, on-demand vehicle behavior that faithfully reflects driver intent under all driving conditions, from everyday use to emergency avoidance situations.

MITSUBISHI Concept-RA is powered by a new high-efficiency, low-emissions 2.2-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve turbodiesel engine with MIVEC continuously variable valve timing control. With piezoelectric injector common-rail direct fuel injection that allows a lower compression ratio and with a VD (Variable Diffuser)/VG (Variable Geometry) turbocharger, the clean diesel unit delivers a maximum output of 150 kW (204 PS) and maximum torque of 420 Nm (42.8 kg-m). For compliance with U.S. emissions standards (Tier 2 Bin 5 emission regulations), the engine relies on a new catalytic converter system that brings together diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), NOx trap catalyst (NTC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) technologies. The new diesel engine will deliver exciting driving manners with a high degree of fuel efficiency.

There is one thing I do not understand about Ford and their grills, they have their nice big chrome grill that looks like this |==| on like all of their trucks and suvs (even the ranger) expect for the F150, it doesn't make sense to me?

Let me be the first to say it... the 2009 F-150 is going to CRUSH it

Redesigned engine, diesel on the way, tail gate step, redesigned exterior and interior, built in tow command system, new higher trim level, sync, etc...

Wow... truck of the year next year.

Is anybody else a little surprised that ford has completely redesigned the F150 once and had time to do a substantial refresh to it in the past 8 years or so, and the Ranger is being left to rot, abandoned so to speak like the red headed step child of the family (couple of sheet metal changes aside)? ouch

They’re scared a completely redesigned Ranger would cannibalize the F-150 sales. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the end of the XLT forms of the Ranger and it went all-commercial.

Ford ignores the Ranger, citing falling sales of the compact pickup segment. That's true, but they've pretty much just given in to Toyota and Nissan, who now domimate the segment. The Colorado/Canyon are okay but are a bit small and underpowered, and Dakota just isn't what it used to be.

I think if Ford and Mazda teamed up and created a new compact pickup that the two companies could sell worldwide they could come up with a really nice product but it doesn't sound like that will happen.

Precisely. Most compact pickup trucks aren't really compact anymore. The Tacoma and Dakota are positively huge compared to their predecessors. The Colorado/Canyon are decent, but serve their purpose as a small pickup truck.

The old F150 was positively atrocious compared to the redesign a few years ago which was quite the surprise. I can see where Ford might be afraid a redesigned Ranger would eat into F150 sales, but the sale of a Ford product is still a sale for them. Not to mention the all important fuel economy debate. Considering that Explorer sales are down nearly 60% from 3 years ago, it's obvious that big trucks are playing less a role as bread and butter money makers. Small trucks may not be the only solution, but at least having a competitive product might help some

That's rubbish. Ford let the Ranger rot over the years without bothering to update, instead focusing on its cash cow, the F150. Very typical of American companies.

The end result is that Toyota and Nissan ran away with that market segment with far superior product. Now Ford is trying to figure out what to do - update the Range, bring in the Thai Ford Ranger, or just kill it.

They already have. I saw both the Ford and Mazda models all over Thailand when I was there last week. They're handsome, well-styled quad-cab utility pickups with nice little diesels. Why they're not already here is a mystery that only makes sense to Ford marketroids.

Tell me that wouldn't sell. Hell, restyle the headlights and it looks EXACTLY like the new F-150.

I'm glad to see Ford injecting some style into the sub-compact market b/c the current cars in the class are but ugly.

I kinda like this new Verve, but looking at it from the rear 3/4, it looks like the thing is about to fall backwards on its ass b/c it's so "rear heavy"

With diesel costing way more than regular gas, an all diesel fleet of F150s would rot on dealership lots. With every little state setting their own emissions laws, getting a petrol powered car to be 50 state legal is difficult enough, but add diesel, and the legalities become way more complex. Ford's tactic with the F150 seems to be working, however, as it is still the best selling vehicle on the planet!

Way to go on the interior/exterior redo! I love how Ford made the interior upscale, and even futuristic, without making it a copy of an older A6 dashboard (I'm looking at you, Chevy.).
